3 Reasons We Can't Wait for 'Emily Owens M.D.' Including a Hot New Lesbian Character

It’s Grey’s Anatomy meets Mean Girls this season on  the CW’s new drama Emily Owens M.D. and we could not be more excited! Mamie Gummer plays the titular character, a first-year surgical intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, who discovers that hospital life is not so far from high school, especially when she’s forced to work with her ex crush and her ex nemesis (Aja Naomi King). On the upside, Emily does befriend the Chief of Staff’s daughter Tyra Granger who, lucky for LGBT representation on television, also happens to be a lesbian.

There’s really no getting around the fact that Mamie is the daughter of acting legend – Meryl Streep. One only need look to her impeccable bone structure to see the resemblance, but she’s not only adorable, she’s got some real acting chops. Fans of The Good Wife know that Mamie went toe to toe with Julianna Margulies’ Alicia Florrick several times as the naïve like a fox attorney Nancy Crozier, and completely held her own. On the big screen Mamie costarred with her mom, Glenn Close, Natasha Richardson and Claire Danes in 2007’s Evening, an epic story of generations of women. She also starred in Shonda Rhimes short-lived doctors-in-the-wild series Off the Map and had a recurring role on The Big C.

Playing Emily’s best new friend at Denver Memorial is Kelly McCreary, who’s formerly appeared on television in Cyberchase andWhite Collar. On Emily’s first day Tyra helps show her the lay of the land at the hospital, specifically the cliques. “Mean girls go into plastics…stoners – anesthesiology” and so on, Tyra informs Emily.  Tyra also reveals from the start that her dad is the Chief of Staff who’s not so keen on the fact that he got a lesbian for a child rather than a son.
