South African track star Caster Semenya will keep the gold medal she won at the world championship games this summer despite controversy over her true gender, reports the Advocate.
It turns out Semenya will keep the 800-Meter gold medal she earned in August at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin.
The Associated Press also reported that the South African sports ministry pushed the International Association of
Athletics Federations to keep the recent gender test results strictly between patient and doctor. Once the IAAF agreed, the ministry announced Thursday that the results will remain confidential.
"Whatever scientific tests were conducted legally within the IAAF regulations will be treated as a confidential matter between patient and doctor," the sports ministry said in a statement. "As such there will be no public announcement of what the panel of scientists has found. We urge all South Africans and other people to respect this professional ethical and moral way of doing things."??
Semenya's tests are not yet complete. The IAAF ordered the tests shortly after her win in Berlin in the 800-meter final due to her rapid improvement over the past year and muscular build. ??
Originally, the ministry claimed the IAAF ordered gender test pre-race, but it turned out Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene lied about these tests being performed; he was later suspended from his post.
Though the Australian press had reported that Semenya had both male and female genitalia the finding had never been confirmed by the IAAF or ASA. |
