OurChart.com Pulls the Plug

Sources tell SheWired.com that word came down Friday afternoon that OurChart.com will be shutting off all content effective immediately. The social networking site launched in 2006 and was born out of the hugely successful Showtime series The L Word.

Editor Grace Moon notified the staff of contributors and bloggers via e-mail on Friday afternoon.

Moon said in the e-mail that the entire staff had been let go and that Friday would be her last day.

According to the e-mail, the site will remain online but no new editorial content will be posted.

The site was the brainchild of Showtime and L Word creator Ilene Chailken and figured prominently into several episodes. L Word stars Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig were attached to the site at its outset. According to sources, the announcement came as a complete surprise to the staff.

The site sought to compete with the Logo run AfterEllen.com .

Staff members at OurChart.com could not be reached for comment late Friday afternoon.

Sad But Not A Surprise
I don't participate in or visit MyChart but
it's sad to find out that there will be one
less lesbian social networking site and that
people abruptly lost their jobs. This isn't
surprising, though, with TLW ending and the
original chart having been erased on the
show.

Budget...
The economy and budget I heard. It's tough to
make money these days. And the site only
really hit it out of the park when the L Word
was on the air. They had some great content
though...it's too bad.

Site looked horrible
Design killed it. I would of loved to the
opportunity to throw a new skin on it. Shit I
would of done it for free. Forums are popping
for it to stay around but gosh did that site
look atrocious. AE could do better too but
they've been around for a long time.
Longevity goes a long way online, it's all
about the search engines.

OurChart was hard on the eyes
I tired to pop onto the website occasionally,
but it's a mess. Poorly designed and they
just keep making it worse. Also, they can't
figure out what they are. About a year ago
they took a poll to find out if it should be
a lesbian website or something that would
appeal to all women in general. It needed
help. Hiring a designer and at least one
good writer would have helped.

I hate to see it end
Wow. I just read about this at OurChart and
followed a link to here. I agree, OC was
often "a mess and poorly designed" but it was
the regular commentors and bloggers that made
that place rock. I've made wonderful friends
over there. Plus I'm sorry for the staff for
losing their jobs so suddenly. Best of luck
to all of them.
