Blatant bigotry in Texas, what’s next? Oranges in Florida? Sunshine in California?
Betty Brown a Republican Representative from Texas made offensive remarks while Ramey Ko, a representative of the Organization of Chinese Americans, was testifying before her and the House Elections Committee.
Brown said, addressing Ko, “Rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese -- I understand it's a rather difficult language -- do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here?"
The comments spurred the Texas Democratic Party to demand an apology from Rep. Brown, but a spokesman for her said the remarks were merely an attempt to help problems with Asian name recognition for voting purposes.
