Hawaii's House Wusses Out, Killing Civil Unions' Bill

The Hawaii state House of Representatives, in a cowardly move on Friday, effectively killed a civil unions bill that passed the state Senate last week, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. Now, the bill that would have granted the state's same-sex couples the rights of marriage, without the hot-button name of marriage, can not be reconsidered this session unless two-thirds of the reps vote to bring it back to the floor.

Members of the House refused a roll call vote, which would have put their individual positions on record. Rather, they each shouted "aye" or "no" prompting the vice speaker of the House to rule the motion to delay the vote had passed.

House members' refusal to own up to their positions caused outrage among the bill's supporters who shouted "Shame on you!" to the lawmakers, while the bill's opponents cheered the cowardly House members on.

"It's an election year and they're more concerned about keeping their seats than doing what's right," said Stephen Nagle, who was wearing a rainbow lei to show his support for civil unions.
