Hearing Set in Constance McMillen's Prom Case

School officials in a Mississippi county told lesbian student, Constance McMillen, to get "guys" to take her and her girlfriend to the high school prom.

According to the AP, documents filed Tuesday in federal court also warned the girls against slow dancing with each other because that could "push people's buttons."

The American Civil Liberties Union had filed a lawsuit against the Mississippi high school after the district cancelled their prom because McMillen, 18, wanted to bring her girlfriend as a date and wear a tuxedo.

McMillen will soon go before U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson, who will hear arguments in the motion filed by the ACLU on her behalf. The hearing is set for March 22 in Aberdeen.

The suit in the U.S. district court calls for Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton to reinstate the prom.

In the new court documents, McMillen said Rick Mitchell, the assistant principal at the school, told her she could not attend the prom with her girlfriend but they could go with "guys." Superintendent Teresa McNeece told her that the girls should attend the prom separately, had to wear dresses and couldn't slow dance with each other because that could "push people's buttons."

The school district last week said it wouldn't host the prom "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events." District officials said they hoped private citizens would sponsor a dance.

McMillen said she approached school officials weeks ago about wanting to take her girlfriend to the prom.

"I want my prom experience to be the same as all of the other students, a night to remember with the person I'm dating," McMillen said.
