VOTE: SheWired's Gay Woman of the Year 2009!

by Tracy E. Gilchrist, Lesley Goldberg and Boo Jarchow | Article Date: 12/27/2009 9:54 AM
VOTE: SheWired's Gay Woman of the Year 2009!

It’s been a year of ups and downs for lesbian visibility with wins and losses for same-sex marriage across the country. While lesbian characters on the small screen dwindled to only a couple in prime-time when The L Word bid its final adieu in March, real gay women continued to provide thoughtful, fun and important representation in reality television, on the Web and in talk and news’ shows.

To honor the year in real-life lesbians and bisexual women who were visible at all costs, we are launching our first annual SheWired’s Gay Woman of the Year. We’ve thrown a wide swath of tried and true favorites, icons who just came out, Web stars, writers, musicians and journalists.  We’ve also included a few teams of lesbians whose work helped make the world a little bit better of a place for budding lesbians worldwide.

Please reminisce about the year in gay women with us, and don’t forget to vote at the end! We will close the voting on New Year's Eve and announce the winner shortly after. You can vote for multiple people. And while we are voting for a winner, these women are all winners for even being on our radar to make the list.

Brandi Carlile

Fans of folk singer Carlile have known for years that the singer of "The Story" is gay, but it wasn't until an October interview with the Los Angeles Times that the subject came up and she publicly came out. Carlile, who gained fans after songs from her last album were featured on Grey's Anatomy, hit the road again this year in support of Give Up the Ghosther third full-length album. Featuring songs like "Dreams" and "I Will," the emotionally charged album continues to win the out singer-songwriter fans by the handful. An addition to Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair 2010 was almost a no-brainer.

Leisha Hailey

Hailey, as Alice Pieszecki, was the only out actress to survive all six seasons of The L Word. Jenny stole her script, her best friend and her spotlight, but she couldn't steal the spirit of the landmark lesbian show, which ended its run in January. While the show really revolved around Jenny's lesbian experience, Hailey was and will remain the heart and driving force of the drama. Hailey continues to make beautiful music with her band Uh Huh Her.

Kelly McGillis

She was queen of the big screen in the late 80's, facing off with heavy hitters Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford and Jodie Foster in Top Gun, Witness and The Accused, respectively. And while that lesbian urban legend about Kelly McGillis’ three-way battle royale with Jodie and Whitney Houston was the stuff that gay girls’ dreams are made of, 20 years after The Accused, McGillis came out as a lesbian on SheWired’s Girl Rock video blog with Jennifer Corday. She did dip her toes professionally playing a lesbian in indie The Monkey’s Mask and as a closeted DADT prosecutor on The L Word, but McGillis’ classy and humble coming out paired with a successful return to stage in The Pasadena Playhouse’s Little Foxes as well as a spot on the Out 100 makes her a strong contender for our Woman of the Year.

Love them as a couple but...
I love Jill Bennett and Cathy DeBuono as a
couple but they do so much for the community
and have accomplished so much individually
that I think they could have had their own
separate enteries here. Power couple though
they are

One woman?
I think a list is in order. There are so many
women who contribute to our community and our
culture in so many different ways. We need
them all. I don't think I could pick just
one.

Voting
Hello all,
You can vote for multiple people
once from each computer. That's how this
program works. Really, they are all winners.
The voting is just a way to bring attention
to all of the amazing gay women who made a
diff this year. We love them all. That's why
they are on the list.

Brentrjones, while
we love women in general, we are a site with
lesbian / queer tendencies and that's why the
women on our list are all out and proud.
Thanks all! And a Happy Holiday season to
everyone!

Agreed!
I agree, Rachel452. Cathy & Jill are
power-women in their own individual rights.
[And I am watching the latest TGAO right
now.)

re; Lori Michaels
How could you not have THE Dyke Diva on the
list? There is way more to this amazing
singer songwriter who travels all over and
performs shows to let us all know it's OK
"Living Our Life OUT Loud" She is such a
positive influence, did you know that at the
age of 16 she started Reach Out Inc.?
Reach
Out, Inc. is a non-profit organization that
educates and promotes awareness about the
perils of illegal drugs, alcohol abuse,
tobacco, crime, violence, prejudice, and life
threatening diseases such as AIDS and Cancer.
This New Jersey based non-profit organization
was founded in 1989 by Lori Michaels. For
over sixteen years, Reach Out, Inc. and its
volunteers have been inspiring people,
especially our youth to attain their personal
potential, and to make a difference in their
lives and in the lives of others. She is one
individual making a difference!

Everyone on this list has made a wonderful
impact this year. 5 years ago this list would
have been a bit short but wow look at it now.
So hard to pick, everyone inspires me in
different ways. Yes,Tracy, they are all
winners.

You're right that Lori Michaels is fabulous.
I adore her. I did try to feature people who
were really in the media in 2009, or who just
got their start, as opposed to in general. I
am certain Ms. Michaels will make plenty of
future lists. I do tip my proverbial hat to
her.

No question
I'm going to have to say: Jill Bennett and
Cathy Debuono FTW!! both individually, and as
a "power couple" they have done so much for
our community, and on such a personal level.
There is no question, the other ladies on the
list deserve recognition. I think Nicole
Pacent is a hottie and I'm a huge Tegan and
Sara fan, but J and C have touched my life.
Much thanx ladies.

Cherry Bomb Girls
I'm new here & everyone on this list has made
an impact this year it seems. Everyone's
inspiring in different ways. However, I have
to pick the Cherry Bomb Girls because of
their prominence in the public eye [both in
the US & Canada) & their social
consciousness.

Meredith Baxter
Ok, so i'm probably going to make an
unpopular statement. I was surprised to see
Meredith Baxter on this list. I'm not sure
what she has contributed to the LGBT
community aside from very recently coming
out. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy for
her. More power to her. She is a talented
actress, and I believe she will probably be
much happier now that she know longer feels
she must hide, like we all pretty much do
feel or have felt at one time. And I do think
it is great that SheWired supports her.
But everyone else on this list has
contributed their art, time, talents, money,
music, their voice to ensuring the equality
of the LGBT community. Everyone else has been
in the public eye fighting for equality in
their own way.

However, I could simply be
missing something that Meredith has done for
our community aside from "coming out."
Somehow, I missed the part where we could
vote for more than one person. So I only
ended up voting for Cathy DeBuono and Jill
Bennett who have actively sought to lend
their voices and support for LGBT equality
everywhere.

Tracy Gilchrist
I love you, first of all. Second of all, I
have agreed with all your posts on this
topic. I simply wanted to commend you and
your staff for making a wonderful list.....a
plethora of beautiful lesbians who have
impacted our world and our lives over the
year. They are each truly amazing, as are
you Miss Gilchrist! It was difficult to make
one selection only, but when I searched my
heart and soul, there was but one
answer....Jill & Cathy! These ladies are
truly gifts from God to the world and to our
community and no amount of thanks or voting
will ever be enough thanks for exactly what
they do for us and how they inspire us to be
better people and louder, prouder lesbians.
My hats are off to them....I only wish there
was a better, more powerful gesture to show
them my true love and appreciation!
Thank you again, so much Tracy. You are an
inspiration to me and our community also. I
just wanted you to know.

lovely commendation, but thank you SimplyAnn.

informative, heartfelt and a little sarcastic
at times. I'm glad you appreciate what we are

Sooooo - Who ARE...
Did you bother to read the information under
each picture in this article? Then from
there you can go to jillbennett.com or
cathydebuono.com, or to wehavetostopnow.tv,
or to the video player here on shewired. If
that doesn't give you enough information
regarding who Jill Bennett & Cathy DeBuono
are then do the names: Dante's Cove, In Her
Line of Fire, 90210, The Prentender, Start
Trek: DS9, Out at the Wedding or And Then
Came Lola, mean anything to you? Just
saying...

Not to mention....that Cathy & Jill both have
VLOGS on this website of which there is
weekly shows. WHATS YOUR PROBLEM & THE GLOVES
ARE OFF.
Not to mention the fact that
January has Cathy is currently on the cover
of BOUND mag, and together Cathy and Jill are
on the cover of CURVE.
Oh or did we mention
that they are the wonderful ladies that had
the inspiration to create a community within
OUR community? Yes thats right, the CDBC [at
cathydebuono.com). A place where anyone can
come into a chatroom just to hang out, spend
some time...or get some advice. A community
that started with the intention of watching a
live feed, but grew into many friendships,
partnerships, and even into a FAMILY.

You
ask who they are.....but i have to
wonder...how do you NOT know who they are?
Feel free to explore all the amazing things
they have done...and the growth that they
have been able to accomplish, thanks to
SheWired!!!! If by then you still dont know
who they are...or what they have done....Just
ask a member of the CATHY DeBUONO CREW, and
we will tell you!!

else on the list) --- that's kinda how I
didn't know who they were. No need to jump
down my throat. Just a fucking question.

Jill and Cathy
All of these women are lovely and contribute
in someway to our community....that being
said the Prop 8 protest videos that Jill and
Cathy did last year, their impassioned
speeches at the Chicago and Silverlake
events; TGAO and WYP and the way they have
encouraged all of us to live our most honest
lives and the fact that they developed a high
quality webseries all on their own has
impressed me a great deal...so Jill and Cathy
get my vote. Well done ladies.

A Struggle To Vote!
WOW! The choices are sensational, and
beautiful for many reasons. Putting
popularity aside, which is a struggle in any
vote getting process, four woman emerged as
front runners for me. Two of which were
Baxter, and McGillis. Not because they're
beautiful & talented thespians, but seem to
have travelled the emotional road to a
stronger sense of self. Thank You for the
openess!

WOW
How could you not vote for all of the these
wonderful gals? They are all making a
difference in their own ways. There are some
folks missing that could've/should've been
added such as Lacey Stone and Jessica Clark,
and the creators and writers of Anyone But
Me. However, I am grateful for the multitude
and variety of the selections that there were
to choose from. We are making progress bit
by bit.
