The upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars looks like it’s going to be one to watch. As if the addition of the U.S. women’s soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo to the season 13 cast weren’t enough to keep us coming back each week, Chaz Bono will definitely have us tuning in.
Bono’s appearance on DWTS makes him the first transgender cast member, and his inclusion is a welcome step forward for LGBT representation on primetime.
“At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast of a series like Dancing With the Stars is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are an important part of the fabric of American culture,” said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD. “His documentary, Becoming Chaz, was a great chance for viewers to meet the man behind the headlines. Appearing on such a high profile show will allow millions of Americans to get to know him in a whole new light.”
Other cast announcements of interest include LGBT ally Ricki Lake, commetator Nancy Grace, Kristin Cavallari, Chynna Phillips of Wilson Phillips fame and the fabulous fashion expert from Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy—Carson Kressley.
The new season premieres Sept. 19.
