Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, are gracing the cover of Architectural Digest’s November issue, which features their Beverly Hills home.
The famous lesbian duo live in a 9,500-square-foot single story home where Joan Collins has lived, and was most recently occupied by Ellen and Portia’s friend, Will & Grace co-creator, Max Mutchnick. “We’d heard how beautiful it was,” remembers De Rossi, “and then we came over to watch American Idol. We pulled into the driveway and—we just knew before we even walked through the gate.”
Even with as much as they loved it, they had big plans for their new home. Ellen enlisted several top Los Angeles decorators and dealers to help pick out just the right furniture, objects and art to fill the house. That house was not the only property purchase Ellen made at the time. She also bought the two neighboring properties, filling one with a pond and dozens of carob, pear and oak trees.
The estate is tailor made to fit the couple’s needs, including a pool where Portia swims laps, a media room where the duo got married and “live at night,” and a meditation room where they get massages.
Real-estate-obsessed Ellen can’t remember how many homes she has owned on her own, but the Beverly Hills property is the seventh she and Portia have shared – one for each year they’ve been together.
The November issue of Architectural Digest hits newsstands on October 11.
