Prime Suspect, the NBC police procedural series starring Maria Bello and her hat will halt production after shooting on the thirteenth episode concludes in New York.
Entertainment Weekly reports the grim news that the peacock “network just announced its new midseason lineup and the cop drama is not on it. Another remake, The Firm, will air in its place.”
The American remake of the beloved BBC series that starred Helen Mirren found favor with critics, but sadly never found it’s audience. EW said the remake, starring Bello in the role of the tough-as-nails cop, “only averaged a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.1 million viewers. Since NBC already canceled Playboy [starring out actress Amber Heard] and Free Agents, NBC clearly wanted to keep its options open on Prime Suspect... It tried running repeats of the show on other nights, but Bello and her cohorts just couldn’t scare up more viewers.”
There’s still a glimmer of hope for fans, though. NBC has not officially announced the series is canceled, but, insiders say, “Cast members were reportedly told the show is history.“

The show was poorly written. It made the male detectives/colleagues all look overly dumb, and was a waste of Maria Bello's talent.Americanized Prime Suspect was predictable, contrived, and not entertaining.

Worth watching is getting the axe? No one is watching? Hello! My household is. I have to record it as it is on late for my schedule but look forward to all the great characters and storylines. I will watch the Firm and have been, but prefer Maria Bello and the cast of Prime Suspect. This decision needs to be reviewed!

I was in shock when I learned that Bello was coming to TV and couldn't wait to see the show. It did not disappoint! She is an amazing actor and it is just sad and disappointing to see this show going the way of Damages! Perhaps another network will pick it up??? Please!
NBC EXECS NEED MARKETING, AND BRAINS
You know the only real CRIME is taking shows like this off the air. Not only did HBO cancel one of the best series they had (The Black Donnelly's; which also starred Kirk Acevedo) but now NBC is going to do the same thing with a BRILLIANT show. How is it that viewers can keep something so pathetic as CSI, located in three different cities in the US that's utterly predictable, no story lines yet they can't tune in for an hour of the best writing and acting seen in a crime drama in over a decade (in my opinion).It's unbelievable that NBC blames viewers not watching, when they should be blaming marketing for not advertising. Nobody knows this show because you don't promote this show during similar series, or on major programs; after reading all of the comments on message boards, polls, forums, facebook and twitter, you would think they just don't care about the show as a whole. They're obviously more concerned about tossing away something great to put on a Debra Messing/Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom to keep the mass audience entertained for 2, maybe 3 seasons. Throw away something great, but keep in mind that at least this viewer won't be watching NBC anymore as there isn't anything good to watch on your station now!

I looked forward to this show each week. It was a gritty, down to earth look at how a tough woman handles her herself among a profession still mostly dominated by men. Unlike other shows where the gorgeous and well endowed female detective dresses in low cut, tight fitting blouses, pencil skirts and high heels (ratings???), Maria Bello was the real deal. Sometimes messy hair, little makeup, comfortable shoes, and non descript clothing, you could relate. She dressed for her job, she wasn't perfect and the stuff she had to deal with wasn't pretty, but her superb acting made her REAL and believable.Its unfortunate that the men running the networks continue to sell "sex" by parading Charlie Angel types in front of us attempting to "sell" us a bill of goods -- females have to be gorgeous and flawless in any profession no matter how dirty the job. You got this wrong guys, this was a great show and I'm a very disappointed fan.

It wasn't even given a chance! It was up against the Mentalist--at least try it in a different time slot. It's a great cop show with a solid female lead--I'm sick of all these so call reality shows. After the first couple of episodes the characters in the show gelled--especially the relationship between Jane and Reg--hated her, now repects her. Scripts were good with just a sprinkle of humor. My personal favorite was "Bitch". I'm glad I bought the episodes on amazon. It's just a shame the network is not willing to give it a chance--at least move to another time slot and finish out the season, then make a decision.

Jane is a role model for young girls as well as women!
Give me a break! Prime Suspect is a refreshing look at police work where a female police officer is just as competent (if not more in some cases) as her fellow male co-workers. She holds her own with the men but still is a beautiful, intelligent & nurturing woman. This show also takes a real look at some of the plights of the common man & puts the viewer in their shoes & actually makes you think-what a concept! There are still people out here who like to think & are not entertained by reality shows that have ridiculous Beverly Hills housewives fighting like alley cats. Please keep Prime Suspect on the air-give it a chance! Some of the most popular shows in TV history did not start out with great ratings-does Seinfeld ring a bell?

I can't belielve this show is getting cancelled! It's really good. It's entertaining, intense and very believable. I look forward to it every week. I think Maria Bello plays the most realistic homicide detective I've ever seen on tv. I'm seriously disappointed.

If you have ever seen real law enforcement types in action, you realize that the stuff that Jane faces in this show is real. She is energetic and cares about the victim as much as getting the "bad" guy. The work environment depicted in this show is real, and her challenges to being successful with all of the testerone in the room is the truth. I don't need to see another mindless "reality" show. NBC, don't pull another "Homicide" and take the best show on regular tv off of the air. Ditto, what you said RD.
Something to Keep us Awake, and Alert on Thursday Nights!
Admittedly, Thursday is a tough night, especially for this genre of program. With Burn Notice, and really, who doesn't love Fiona's role reversal of the macho trigger happy character, as well as The Mentalist nailing down opposing networks' time slots, Prime Suspect had only the slightest chance of making it. There is quite a stark similarity in appearance as well as demeanor, between the Mary Shannon character, played by Mary McCormick, on In Plain Sight, and Maria Bellos' Jane Timiny. I agree that her character is rich, although several of the others are disjointed, making it difficult to warm to the series, as a whole. However, after all these years of inexpensively produced, and as a result, cheap, "Reality Shows," a drama is always a welcome relief. Maybe NBC can salvage her character, in much the same manner Richard Belzer's "Munch" went fro m the Homicide Baltimore detective into NYC's Law & Order Special Victim's Unit. It might be worth the effort to give Maria Bello a workable venue for her character. Just a thought...

I totally agree with you, Prudence. My husband and I watched last night's episode and have come to the conclusion that this show has the best writing, acting and storyline on TV right now. I can't believe that it will be cut. I have looked forward to every single episode. You're right, Prudence. Shame on you NBC! You're dumbing down your audience.

Only thing this fall I would not miss, so I hope it's not true. Maria B. gets better, more believeable and more natural with each episode, and she started high in the first place. I've always liked her choice of role, and a TV series, a remake of the great Helen's, no less, was ambitious. God, the woman is smart and wickedly determined. Love, love, love her work.

This is really most bizzare. The exquisite cast is such a refreshing ensemble, especially for the moors and wastlands outside the citadel of HBO. But these are the times we live in. Reality survivors and Kardasians, dancing with has-beens, the endless anerexic trompe charades, "humor" here and there... these gouls of the bogs deserve each other. Really, THIS was the only thing this year TV had going for it. Back to DVDlandia ~

I found Maria Bello's performance exceptional ... very effective in Her Role.. I Love Her Looks and Wardrobe ... what was lacking to me is the Chemistry of the Cast .. especially comparing " The Closer "and Rizzoli & Isles .....where the WHole Cast blends in with each other ....Sad to see Maria Bello go .... Hopefully somone else will pick Her up in another Show ...
