Ellen DeGeneres Weighs in on Prop 8, JCPenney and One Million Moms - Video

Wed, 2012-02-08 15:21

Ellen DeGeneres is standing up against One Million Moms, an antigay group protesting JCPenney’s hiring of Ellen as a spokesperson for the company. Following the announcement of Proposition 8, the ban on gay marriage in California, being ruled unconstitutional by the 9th circuit on Monday, Ellen took the opportunity to address the great news for equality and discuss the issue of One Million Moms’ boycott on her show.

Ellen doesn’t usually like to pay attention to her haters but in this case she said she wanted to talk about it “because my haters are my motivators.”

"There was some good news for marriage equality in California yesterday," Ellen said. "For a long time, same-sex marriage was not legal. Then, here in California, it was legal for like 25 minutes. Then it was not legal again because of something called Prop 8, which banned same-sex marriage. And I'm happy to say that yesterday an appeals court ruled that Prop 8 was unconstitutional.”

Retail giant JCPenney, “stands behind its partnership with Ellen DeGeneres," despite One Million Moms threatening boycotts of the store if they didn’t fire Ellen solely based on the fact that Ellen is gay. The group issued a statement on their Facebook Page stating, among other things, “By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JCPenney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years.”

Ellen said that she thought once JCPenney didn’t back down that the story would go away, but it didn’t. Ellen read the group’s statement from their Facebook Page to the audience, and pointed out a few important things to remember.

“First of all, being gay or pro-gay isn't a bandwagon. You don't get a free ride anywhere. There's no music. And occasionally we'll sing 'We Are Family' but that's about it."

"Secondly, they said a majority of JCPenney shoppers will be offended and not shop there anymore,” she added. “I'd like to read just a few comments from the Million Moms Facebook page. This is on their page. And not that there's anyone counting, but for a group that calls themselves a Million Moms, they only have 40,000 members on their page. So they're rounding up to the nearest million and I get that."

She read a few of the comments, which supported her partnership with JCPenney, and closed by telling everyone why she decided to talk about the situation on her show.

"I usually don't talk about stuff like this on my show, but I really want to thank everyone who is supporting me," Ellen said. "Here are the values I stand for. I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you'd want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values. That's what I stand for…I also believe in dance."

i AM ME! and you hate me million moms "40,000"

I am me! the one my mom birthed as yours did you, I was a child as were you, I plays Barbie doll rode my bike and played as any child I went to school and graduated went to Medical school came out with 3.? GPA. I gave birth to 4 children. I'm a mother "Mommie" I'm a aunt , a sister, a grandmother, a friend . So why do you hate me "US" I've done nothing wrong to you 40,000. I dont hate you or judge you for the person you chose to love and be loved by. I don't have a need to as you don't have a need to in my case or any other gay lesbian straight persons life for it is ours to lives. Why do you sit and think of what goes on in our love life that is our personal private life as is yours. We don't effect your life until you barge into ours. We don't care who you love as long as they treat you right and that should be anyones concern for any person. But you don't pay for our lives we don't use more tax payers money for we to are taxpays. We pay bill we pay tax we work we shop we serve and we believe love is love. Love is not blind for it see love as a gift that we hope EVERYONE will someday find. So why do you hate me for I am me I can't be anyone but me. I tried and I'm still me. For you say it is not right well hate is also wrong. Judge not lest thy be judged. Let him without sin throw the first stone. Love is the key to so many problems let us love and be loved as you wish to be.

Thank GOD for JC Pennyq

I find it hillarious that hate is now a "traditional family value".  One Million Moms, or rather, a little over 40,000 Moms according to their Facebook page, needs to crawl back into the collective hole they crawled out of and hide their ugly head before Warrior Queen, Ellen, dons her armor and sword of righteousness and comes seeking their Medusa like noggin. I wish JC Penny was in Canada so I could run out and buy something from them in support of their decision to stand behind their hiring of Ellen DeGeneres as their new spokesperson!  Ellen is "hot" right now in America and is bringing them a market that would not normally shop at their stores.  I think that whoever is behind the hiring of Ellen at JC Penny is absolutely brilliant!  Kudos to them for having the foresight to hire Ellen in the first place and then to stick with her in the face of such open hostility.  JC Penny rules.Troy Perrot-Sanderson, a married gay man in Canada

I love Ellen! Gay marriage

I love Ellen! Gay marriage will be a legal right one day all over the world. It is not about what your sexual preference is but about equality... nothing else!

ELLEN D!

KUDOS to JC PENNY for standing behind their partnership with Ellen......and what the hell is wrong with Million MomS? Ellen is likely one of the most decent, honest human beings of our time....yet who in your organization feel it's your place to judge her? I have a couple things I need to buy and was going to stop by Macys (no other reason but that it's on my way home) tomorrow but I am going to JC Pennys instead to support them and ELLEN.This whole country needs to look in the mirror and recognize what the conservatives are doing to the U.S.A. They are dividing people and encouraging hate and bigotry. To them I say: Mind your own lives and stop judging others and issuing your meaningless verdicts about other Americans.

First, who gives this

First, who gives this organization the right to "judge" what's right/wrong ?
Singling out " gays" ... What's next- the physically disabled ? Are you running out of others to judge?
This iis the "thinking" which created slavery , the holocaust, .....Let spend this energy on saving the planet... Not destroying each other.

Have you ever held the door opened for a lady behind you, at the mall, chances are, one of the many many doors you have held open , was for a 'gay' woman. It wasn't that different was it ? We're you able to pick out the "gay ones" ?

Gay people, Asians (myself) .... We all are the same and WE ALL HAVE FEELINGS... WE ARE ALL PEOPLE, EVEN YOU.
