This summer MTV will air reruns of select Daria episodes as part of their Retro Mania programming line up. In addition to the chosen episodes of Daria, every episode of The Hills and the first two seasons of Laguna Hills will be shown again.
Daria, a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-Head, was a popular animated satire from the ‘90s about Daria Morgendorffer, a smart, acerbic misanthropic teenager, and her life in Lawndale as she and her best friend Jane Lane navigate life in high school. The show was full of criticisms of and allusions to social issues and popular culture.
The show aired from 1997 to 2002, but was not released on DVD until eight years after it went off the air. The main reason Daria was not released for so long was because of music license issues. The DVD set has the complete series, plus the two movies that followed the end of the series. For anyone who saw the show when it was originally aired, the DVD episodes will seem slightly less powerful. Because of the licensing problems, almost all the original music – songs from Beck, Britney Spears, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, etc – had to be replaced with filler music. It should be a treat to see the shows with that extra punch the original music added if MTV opts to airs them this summer.
Retro Mania airings of Laguna Hills, The Hills and Daria (does anyone else think that the choice of shows is completely out of left field? Talk about different demographics…) will be from 9am to noon each weekday beginning June 25, and hosted by guest stars providing commentary. Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaefer, from MTV’s upcoming Nikki & Sara Show will be providing the commentary for Daria.
Viewers can relive all the snark from Daria and Jane on MTV every weekday from 9am to noon EST, July 30 to August 3.
