When Frenchie Davis performed Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” on the first episode of The Voice, few viewers knew that Davis had a special attachment to the song. Now the musical theater performer (she starred in Rent, Dreamgirls, and Ain’t Misbehavin) — and once famous contestant of American Idol — has opened up about the girls she’s kissed. At least one in particular, telling the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that she’s been dating a woman for the past year: “I wasn’t out before the relationship, but I wasn’t in. I dated men and women, though lesbians weren’t feeling the bisexual thing. Now I’m in love with a woman I think I can be with forever.”

Davis is performing at Pride festivals around the country — three this weekend alone including St. Louis and Chicago — and while doing so she’s opening up about her love life and her queer fans. “The gay community is my most loyal fan base,” she told Kevin C. Johnson of the Post-Dispatch. “I love the gay boys. They have that awesome, masculine energy, but there’s also something else going on as well.”

The singer who is famed for her sexy outsized curves as much as her lovely pipes, was originally a contestant on American Idol. Then last season she showed up on The Voice, where she made it to the semi-finals (finishing fifth overall), and joined the top contestants on the U.S. tour last summer. She told reporters that even with Idol and the musical theater she’s done, it was The Voice that helped her shore up her own sound — just in time for her new dance single, “Love’s Got a Hold on Me,” which one can only guess has something to say about that lady love of hers.
