The tongue-in-cheek cult fave from Sundance, Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, has garnered raves from film fests for it’s hilarious mash up of ‘50s sci-fi satire and New York rom-com, and the acting chops of the (mostly all-female) cast. Now the flick, nominated for Gotham’s “Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You" Award is making its Los Angeles theatrical premiere with a weeklong run, August 17 to 23.

Playing at the Downtown Independent Theater in L.A., director Madeleine Olnek's film follows three extraterrestrials from the planet Zots that are sent on a mission to rid themselves of romantic emotions, which are considered toxic to their planet’s atmosphere. They are told to have their hearts broken on Earth, where such heartbreak is considered a given.

Codependent Barr (played by Cynthia Kaplan) and the sassy and hypersexual Zylar (played by Jackie Monahan, who Esquire just named one of the best new comics of 2012) actually fall in love with each other. But it’s the affair between Zoinx (played expertly by Susan Ziegler and an easy going dyke named Jane (portrayed pitch perfectly by playwright/actress Lisa Haas) offers the emotional resonance and reliability that elevate the film beyond a spoof. (There’s even a subplot that involves Alex Karpovsky of HBO's Girls, too.)

Many of the showings this week include live Q&A sessions with the director and many cast members (sadly, Haas is not among them). Tickets are $10 at BrownPaperTickets. More info, and showtimes can be found here.
