Top 10 Lesbian TV Moments of 2012

Top 10 Lesbian TV Moments of 2012

At this time of year, with the end of 2012 fast approaching, it’s important to reflect on life’s events over the last 12 months. That got us thinking..... hey, there really were quite a few important television moments geared towards the gay girl.

Some were drama filled, some were campy, some were comedy, some were heartwarming, and some heartbreaking. But all are guaranteed to get you talking.

10) Doctor Who Introduces Interspecies Lady Love

According to a BBC press release, Doctor Who's interspecies lesbian vigilante couple, Silurian lesbian warrior queen Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and Jenny (Catrin Stewart), will return on the show's special Christmas episode, entitled “The Snowmen,” airing on BBC America on December 25th. Hopefully Vastra will be making good use of that multiple-foot-long tongue (wink wink). There's even more to come in the New Year as Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary.

9) Emily and Paige Still Going Strong on PLL

Things are looking up for Rosewood’s lesbian couple! Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Paige’s (Lindsey Shaw) steamy make out session on the ghost train during Pretty Little Liar’s Halloween episode just proves that their love could last. Well, as long as “A” doesn’t have other plans for the duo. You can tune in for the second half of Season 3 starting January 8th.

8) Tara and Pam Make it Official on True Blood

True Blood’s Season 5, entitled “Save Yourself,” gave fans of the show another couple to look forward to when Tara (Rutina Wesley) and Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) capped off their season long flirtation with a kiss. Their relationship started as maker and baby vamp and evolved into a genuine relationship. It happened when Tara and Sookie (Anna Paquin) were busting Pam and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) out of the cellblock at the Authority headquarters. After the girls were released, Tara planted a HUGE kiss on Pam. To which Jessica, who was watching from down the hall, responded with a well timed “I knew it!” The day after the episode aired, HBO released extra footage featuring the new couple. During the bonus scene, they are in an elevator, trying to escape, and as Tara is loading her weapon she looks over at Pam and says,"You better not go and get yourself killed, ya hear? Cause you and I got a date. It's been a long time comin'." To which Pam replied, "If that's not an impetus to survive, I don't know what is."

7) Kalinda’s 'Genital Manipulation' Scene with Lana on The Good Wife

This season, The Good Wife offered the hottest girl/girl sex scene on prime time network TV between bisexual investigator Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) and FBI Special Agent Lana Delaney (Jill Flint). The scene was dubbed “The Genital Manipulation” scene by showrunners Robert and Michelle King, who spoke to EW about what went down on set. “Jill Flint and Archie Panjabi did such a wonderful job in the scene. We’ve always thought sexiness was better played on the face, but it was difficult to get around [what was happening below frame],” Robert said. Michelle added, “We made sure that one didn’t see anything that was objectionable. We couldn’t work around what an audience member might imagine.”

6) The Rise of Rachel Maddow

According to The Hollywood Reporter, wth Maddow’s help, MSNBC saw a big boost in both total viewers (913,000) and adults 25-54 (290,000), rising a respective 18 and 20 percent. In 2012, Maddow saw her highest-ever scores in total viewers. And that’s not all! The out anchor kicked off 2012 by being named this year’s recipient of the prestigious John Steinbeck Award, given to public figures who exemplify the late author’s values. Media Bistro reported that she was only the third woman to win the award and the first recipient under 40. Now, Maddow ends the year being nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Spoken Word Album” category, for her audiobook recording of the NY Times bestseller, Drift: The Unmooring Of American Military Power. If she wins, she would be the first cable news anchor to win a Grammy.

5) Sarah Paulson on American Horror Story

Out actress Sarah Paulson has been bringing it all season on American Horror Story: Asylum. The actress has really upped her game in her role of Lana, a lesbian who has been committed, against her will, to Briarcliff Manor. The most shocking episode to date, (and that’s saying a lot because this season is beyond twisted) entitled I Am Anne Frank: Part I, had her character going through aversion/conversion therapy to “cure her of her affliction.” Paulson spoke to EW about the scene, “It was both hard and kind of exhilarating. I know that sounds insane but it’s like what I mean about the whole season so far: although terrible things are happening to Lana, wonderful things are happening to me as an actress. This is the first time I’ve gotten to really emotionally reveal myself in a raw way and that is new so that was very hard that scene but it was very exciting from an acting standpoint.”

4) Army Wives Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

The Army Wives lesbian storyline featured a public kiss, one which would never have take place during the era of DADT. The kiss, between Army Captain Nicole (Kellie Martin) and her girlfriend Charlie (Ryan Michelle Bathe) happened at the public pick up spot when Nicole, and her fellow soldiers, returned home from active duty. Nicole, accustomed to hiding her sexuality, was hesitant to allow her relationship to go public and prior to the kiss, Charlie struggled with whether or not to join the other families, friends and loved ones in greeting their soldiers. But, in the end Charlie showed, they locked eyes with Charlie saying, “Don’t be mad.” Nicole surprised Charlie with her sweet reply of “come here,” and then Nicole leaned over and planted one on her girl. Awwwww!

3) Britannia’s Breakup on Glee

Crunch! Did you hear that? That was the sound of hearts breaking all over the country when fan faves Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana (Naya Rivera) ended their two year romance. Santana’s sweet serenade of “Mine” just pushed the Gleeks over the edge. They can’t be done, we just won’t accept it!

2) Calzona, Through it All

Seattle Grace out residents Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), have survived a car accident, a long distance relationship, a hospital shooting spree, and most recently, a plane crash. Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes recently wrote on her blog, “To have your partner hate you. To have your sex life taken away. To have your BEST FRIEND taken away. Arizona has been taken from her and Callie is doing her best to survive that." Arizona unfairly blamed her lady love for the loss of her limb, but things are slowly getting back to a new normal for the couple. Rhimes has promised viewers that by Valentine’s Day the old, happy, playful and sexy couple would be back in swing!

1) Kate McKinnon Makes History on SNL

The Big Gay Sketch Show alum Kate McKinnon made Saturday Night Live history when she was added to the long running comedy sketch show’s roster earlier this year, becoming the first out lesbian featured player. Since then, she has offered up some seriously funny impressions of Sofia Vargara, Penelope Cruz, Ann Romney, and even Ellen, to name only a few. And in recognition of her talent, she was recently named top dog on Forbes magazine’s annual 30 Under 30 list. McKinnon was given the ultimate compliment by Forbes staffer Michael Noer when credited her with being "the next Tina Fey."
