Mamie Gummer to Play Lesbian Detective in CBS's 'Backstrom'

The CW’s medical drama Emily Owens MD, about a navel-gazing, awkward but promising intern played by Mamie Gummer, only lasted a season, much to the chagrin of a devoted, if not smallish, group of fans. But there’s good news for Mamie’s fans. Not only has she landed the lead in another pilot, she’s playing a lesbian cop in CBS’s Backstromopposite Rainn Wilson, Deadline reports.

Mamie will play Nicole Graveley, a “watchful, competent” police detective and lesbian trying to get over her break-up with her longtime partner, according to Deadline. She’ll be the foil to Rainn’s Everett Backstrom, “an overweight, offensive irascible detective” who can’t curb his destructive behavior.

Prior to Emily Owens MD, Mamie costarred in Shonda Rhimes’ short-lived Off the Map, and she had a terrific arc as an upstart attorney on The Good Wife. On the big screen she has appeared in Side Effects, and Evening (with her mom Meryl Streep).

Who else is excited to see Mamie play a lesbian detective? We’re already thinking about love interests we can cast for her.
