The crazy BS that anti-gay conservatives come up with as arguments against gay marriage never ceases to amaze us. Georgia Republican Chairwoman Sue Everhart now argues that if gay marriage is allowed, straight people will pretend to be gay and marry each other for the health benefits.
“Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits?” Everhart said, according to The Huffington Post. “I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.”
Hey, Sue Everhart! We’ve seen this movie too. It’s called I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, and it’s not real! When conservatives start taking Adam Sandler movies as gospel we know we’re screwed.
Well, the ridiculousness of Everhart’s assertion did not get past Jimmy Kimmel and his staff. The late night talk show host skewered Everhart with a segment entitled “Gay Couple or Straight Friends” in which he showed his audience clips of random pairs on the street in West Hollywood and quizzed them on whether the couples were gay couples or straight friends.
