Teri Polo and Sherri Saum, who play lesbian moms raising biological, adopted and foster kids on ABC Family’s latest juggernaut The Fosters, stopped by the Hallmark channel’s Home and Family to discuss their roles.

While the male interviewer has loads of trouble stumbling over saying anything “same-sex”-related on air, Polo and Saum are simply marvelous together, proving they’re as watchable in real life as in character.

The better part of the interview is spent discussing parenting and parenting biological kids versus foster children, but the pair does touch on the whole playing gay aspect of their roles. When asked if either of them had any trepidation about taking on their roles Polo says, “I took one look at Sherri and said, ‘Sure, I’ll play lesbian.’”

Saum goes on to say that her only concern was if the show would be handled with care, which it has been.

“This is an honor to be a part of something instead of going around chasing aliens and stuff like that,” Polo says of her role on the show. “It’s an honor to play a mom and to be a part of something that affects people, and that they care about.”

If an interview with these two isn’t enough, be sure to watch Polo and Saum in a cooking? segment. It’s a little reductive that Polo, Saum and the female cohost cook for the dopey guy cohost, but it’s Hallmark after all. It’s good the network took on the interview in the first place.
