After five years of chilling on ABC Family's Secret Life of An American Teenager, Shailene Woodley jetted to stardom with a highly reviewed and Golden Globe nominated turn in The Descendants. Since then, she's become the queen of Young Adult Land, starring in the upcoming The Fault in Our Stars, a mega-hit tear jerker about teens with cancer, and most impendingly, Divergent, the next big series along the Hunger Games/Mortal Instruments vein. She's proven she can carry a TV series, 's mastered smaller indies (The Spectacular Now is perfect movie-night fodder), and now she's got the weight of millions of teens' expectations on her shoulders. But Shailene's not your aveage, everyday superstar.

22-year-old Shailene's unusual lifestyle and ethereal calmness often sets her apart from other celebrities her age. She finds and collects her own drinking water, doesn't claim a permament home, and only buys used clothes. When asked about her religious beliefs in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she responds, "My religion is the earth, man...I believe in trees." She doesn't just talk the talk, she dives headfirst into an earth-saving, body-purifying lifestyle that's so intense it almost hard to believe she's also a Hollywood star. And yet, luckily, here she is, bringing something new to the table with a much-needed honesty. In the same interview, when asked if she was in a relationship with two of her close friends, Shailene, who didn't go into detail on her love life, stated, "I fall in love with human beings based on who they are, not based on what they do or what sex they are." Whether this is referring to sexuality or friendship, it's incredibly refreshing for a young celebrity whose image is blasted across the world to simply not seem to care how she's perceived or what stigmas may be attached to her implications. To Shailene, this doesn't seem to be some big revelation but rather the way in which she openly lives her life, one where sexuality isn't something she feels she has to hide or fear.

Does it really matter what Shailene Woodley's sexuality is? Nope. Is it important that she apparently doesn't feel a need to label herself as straight to protect her very public, very youth-oriented image? Definitely. A celebrity coming out can be a very big deal, and that can be a really great thing. Ellen Page's beautiful speech at an HRC conference last month opened minds, touched hearts, and spread much-needed awareness. But a celebrity also stating a casual fact in a relaxed setting is also a step in a very right direction. Shailene Woodley is the face of a massive new franchise, and hopefully her openess and positivy will catch on to the far-and-wide audience she reaches. I'm not saying we all need to go climb a mountain to get our drinking water, but three cheers for another young star whose honesty could help continue to make a difference in our ever-evolving world.
