Lesbians have been around since the dawn of time, but many of us only think of same-sex couples in a post-Stonewall world. It's almost as if they couldn't possibly exist in public before that era, and stayed hidden in the shadows like the two women "friends" who (sadly) never married so they lived together as roommates.
Buzzfeed found a number of vintage photos of lesbian couples on a Tumblr post that no longer exists. Fortunately, the Buzzfeed page does, so we were able to take some of those fantastic shots along with some other photos we found hidden in the depths of the internet and compile them for you.
These aren't just images that one could misinterpret as 'gay' - from the way the various subjects hold hands, look at each other, or even kiss - these women are definitely more than friends. It's a fun, sweet, and supremely romantic tribute to Valentine's Day. Enjoy.

Brassaï
The second photograph in this series was taken by Brassaï, a Hungarian photographer who lived and worked in Paris. This particular photograph was taken at Le Monocle in 1932. Le Monocle was a well-known lesbian bar in Montmartre, Paris. The bar was called "Le Monocle" because donning a monocle was a popular way of signifying that you were a lesbian in 1920s and 30s Paris (see Romaine Brooks' portrait of Lady Una Troubridge). If you google "Brassaï" or "Le Monocle" you can find more images like the one posted here. He also took some photographs of gay men. Look up "One Suit for Two."
Beautiful
This collection is inspiring. Does anyone have some background on any of the other pictures? I have to say it's fun to imagine their history, but I'd love to know more. Thank you for preserving them!
Wow! This is our heritage
I think this is really useful, especially for those women who are only coming out now. And for our straight family and friends to understand and realize we are normal and have always been here.
Love it.
Love has been around since the year DOT, there's just no stopping it regardless, Gay, Lesbian or Hetero.
It's so sad that even on
It's so sad that even on these days people just can't approve of love no matter the gender...beautiful and lively pictures :)
hi
im inlove with a lesbian this is my first time..the feeling is so different.i become stupid and i cannot understand my self ;(
@lavz
Hey, we've all been there. Just trust yourself and go with the flow. If you are letting your true self guide you for the first time it will feel very different. But becoming true to who you are (if this is indeed who you are) can only be a good thing, and will feel more natural in time. *Hugs*
Suich delightful pictures.
I wish that more such photos might be available. They make me feel young again and remind me of the days when I first met my beloved partner Gwenneth.with thanks,Rose P.

Oh, dear
The sailor boy wannabe has camel toe.
REALY....?
.....this is what you take away from this delightful series of Photos, the fact that one can see the outline of the "sailor boy wannabe('s)" labia?! And then to compair the visual of her lovely vulva to a "camel toe".....Realy? Certainly you can find far better things to occupy what is obviously an astonishing attention to detail, not to mention, a majorly creative and mind blowing intelect, than this wonderful collection of pix taken of our Sisters of Yesteryear, no?
Famous Photo
The top shot on page 6 of the 2 women at a bar was taken by the infamous photojournalist WeeGee @1946. He of "Naked City" fame...lovely...:)
