Girlfriends Films' Adult Film Shoot -A First-Hand Look
When I pulled up outside of a large, gated home in Encino at four o’clock, I can’t say I had much of an idea what to expect. I could guess at a few of the people that would be present -- some decent-looking girls, a director, maybe some camera men, who knows how many onlookers -- but that was about it. I parked my car, punched the intercom and listened to my heart tattoo loudly against my chest before it jumped at the grinding sound of the door beginning to swing inwards.
As I walked up the front stairs to the house, a stocky butch lesbian wearing a backwards hat and a red bandana tied through one of the loops of her jeans introduced herself as Candi-Girl. She was friendly and calm -- indicating that nothing about our situation was strange.
As a producer, it wouldn’t be. She had witnessed hundreds, probably thousands of hours of footage. For many other people though, certainly for me, watching the filming of a queer porn would be anything but an ordinary occasion.
Sinn Sage entered the bedroom, her long, thick black hair black hair falling over her shoulders and down her back. Elexis Monroe, blonder, a little older, casually wearing jeans and a light blue tank top, was waiting for her.

Sinn Sage and Elexis Monroe
Two days earlier, I had gotten an email from my editor asking if I was interested in covering a porn shoot. Since I am not an idiot, I immediately said yes.
The shoot would be for Girlfriends Films, a brand that, according to its website, is for “Fine folks with good hearts and curious minds” and “Your #1 source for all-girl DVDs in the world.” I can’t say I got much of a sense of the films or the mission from the taglines, but the “About Me” section was a little more helpful. The main idea behind Girlfriends Films, which strangely enough was started as a project in a UCLA extension class for documentary filmmaking, is that the films are, well… not fake.

Though, like any other video porn company, they produce some films with complicated back stories, some films with multiple girls, and of course, extremely explicit sexual content, they are based on the idea that there is some real connection happening on screen.
The girls get to request who they work with, and during the filming, they take a long time for foreplay. In fact, the actual sex -- positions, length of time, toys -- is dictated by them rather than a director.
As Dan O’Connell, the president of the company, says, there isn’t even really a director on set. He, Candi-Girl, and a woman named Sabrina make up the camera crew, and though there is some direction with dialogue, while they are actually filming the sex scenes there is no contact with the girls themselves, just whispering among the crew as to how best to film what is taking place.
Sinn let out an excited, snake-like hiss before getting onto the bed. She pushed herself on top of Elexis and began softly stroking her cheek. For perhaps thirty very intense seconds they just stared at each other, their blond and dark locks intermingling like river currents as they ran their hands through each other’s hair.

Regarding "diverse group of people"
Re: "The deep connection of the actors in their scenes lends to Girlfriends films’ watchers to be a diverse group of people: mainly, straight and gay couples and gay girls."With all due respect this sentence is very silly as well as ungrammatical - and indeed I find it to be monosexist. You're not seriously suggesting are you Ariel, that most of the men who watch Girlfriends Films do so mainly when their female partners are with them? :)That's hilarious. Girlfriends Films do have a female following but they would be out of business if it wasn't for their male customers. Most of the women in their films are bisexual and I think you'd find also that most of the women who enjoy their films would identify as bisexual, bi-curious or straight rather than gay and/or lesbian.Sweetheart and Triangle are both run by women who used to work for Girlfriends - and they espouse similar principles when it comes to working with performers who are women who love women and partnering people who are attracted to each other.Nica Noelle of Sweetheart (who is bisexual) is stricter on this than Girlfriends and will only employ girl-girl performers who identify as bisexual, lesbian or queer. Girlfriends has employed some women who are straight and "gay for pay" in the past but I think they are going more for genuinely bi and gay women these days.Nica Noelle could give work to a straight female porn star though because she produces and directs straight porn for her company Sweet Sinner Videos. Elexis Monroe has made at least 8 films with Nica & Sweet Sinner and she'd probably tell you she likes doing boy-girl when Nica Noelle is the director. Sinn Sage only does girl-girl - well she may possibly have done some boy-girl early in her career. But she is bi and has a long term boyfriend I believe. It is worth bearing in mind though that a porn star who started of being just "gay for pay" can experience a shift in her or his sexual orientation over time - Annie Sprinkle is a very good example of this.

Hey!So I agree with you that there are definitely straight single guys, or guys on their own time, that watch this stuff. What is interesting is that there ARE a large number of couples that watch Girlfriends Films. I'm not trying to suggest that it's the only demographic. However, and perhaps Girlfriends is giving out incorrect information (which I agree is worth looking up from a separate source), according to them it is largely couples who puchase their work. And you are correct in saying that Girlfriends didn't always employ queer girls- however, it does seem to be the case now that none of their girls are "gay-for'pay."Also, I'm extremely interested in learning about people in the porn industry whose sexual orientation shifts over time. That's definitely not something I've read about and I will start looking into it!Lastly (and because I'm a grammar nerd), how would you like that sentence to read?Ariel
Oh man
All I want to do is watch this film NOW. I love Sinn Sage. She's absolutely one of my favorite performers. I'm also totally jealous that you got to watch a porn shoot. You're the second writer I know THIS WEEK who has been on set. I've now made this one of my life goals.
