GLAAD Counters Ellen DeGeneres / JC Penney Partnership Haters with 'Stand Up for Ellen'
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is throwing its support behind JC Penney and it’s choice to partner with Ellen DeGeneres, especially in light of the antigay group One Million Moms’ campaign to urge the retail giant to fire DeGeneres based solely on the fact that she’s a lesbian, according to a press release from GLAAD.
In response to One Million Moms call to action, GLAAD is asking that the public “Stand Up for Ellen,” generating a list of people who support JC Penney’s decision to partner with the comedian, and asking the people call the retailer to voice their support.

JC Penney President Michael Francis voiced his enthusiasm for the partnership in a press release:
"Importantly, we share the same fundamental values as Ellen. At JC Penney, we couldn’t think of a better partner to help us put the fun back into the retail experience. Moving forward, we’ll be focused on being in sync with the rhythm of our customers’ lives and operating in a ‘Fair and Square’ manner that is rooted in integrity, simplicity and respect. We’re thrilled that she’s joining our team to help convey the exciting transformation under way.”
One Million Moms, in a blog, responded to Francis with a call for a boycott stating, "By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years."
Ironically, back in 1997 JC Penney wanted nothing to do with DeGeneres, who came out as a lesbian in her personal life and on her sitcom. DeGeneres famously came out on the cover of Time while her alter ego Ellen Morgan came out in an episode entitled “The Puppy Episode.” JC Penney and Chrysler pulled sponsorship of The Ellen Show over pressure from Rev. Donald E. Wildmon and the American Family Association, which threatened to spearhead boycotting the show’s advertisers, according to an article in South Carolina’s Herald-Journal.
GLAAD reports that since the organization first put out the call "Stand Up for Ellen," more than 10,000 people have signed the GLAAD petition and a poll in the LA Times reveals that 96 percent of people who responded support DeGeneres and JC Penney.

against hatred
I love Ellen and I love JCP and now that the two have come together is great. We now live in a society where things are different but in a good way. Its time for these people to realize that love is love and how people live is their decision. I am honored to support Ellen and JCP and anyone for that matter that let people be who they are and embrace the integrity and honor of who that person is.I am sickened to death that the Christian community says to love all but is spewing hatred towards gays. They are the ones with the problem and God loves us all and doesnt care who or what we do in the bedroom. If more people just loved from their heart, this world would be a better place.I used to live in that Christian world but left because they are all raging hypocrites.
If J.C. Penney wanted a new
If J.C. Penney wanted a new democraphic, they got it. I will definately support a company that can change directions and support "integrity and respect. While they may have bowed to Rev. Donald E. Wildmon and the "American Family Association" in 1997- they are not doing so now in 2012- it is a new day, and I hope that people will continute to show their support of J.C. Penney by calling 972-431-1000. I also am encouraging everyone that I know to buy one thing (I like watches) at J.C. Penny this weekend. Money talks-let yours get loud.
JCP & Ellen
Mom of three - fully support Ellen as spokesperson for JCPenney. By the way, they are also protesting Macys for a print ad featuring two men on a wedding cake topper. I feel sorry for the children of these "one million moms" and for our society that has deal with this ignorance. Guess it's good advertising for the one million moms club but perhaps someone in that organization should be fired. Their website has a section "if you see a program that is offensive - email us" at http://onemillionmoms.com/ComplaintForm.asp. Well, I find "one million moms" offensive.
JCP and Ellen
Wow nothing better to do Moms then slam something like this. I bet if you had tickets to the Christmas giveawy show you would show up and take the gifts. Of all the things wrong in the world you pick something like this.
JCP & Ellen
I just sent an email to JCP complaining about the dumb ad they have on TV, but now I will send them a note praising them for standing up to bigotry. Yes, I know, it is probably a smart marketing decision. I get that. I also know, we have to take stands in life and this is a good one. For whatever reason, JCP is doing the right thing. Too bad hate-mongers with your traditional values of bigotry and prejudice! Way to go, JCP!
