On the one-year anniversary of DOMA's overturn Marriage Equality USA shot a series of interviews with Edie Windsor, the woman whose story really helped make it all happen. Part 3 of the series features Windsor discussing her meeting and chemistry with attorney Roberta Kaplan, and just what Windsor thinks her partner Thea Spyer would have thought of her activism. She also discusses her introduction to LGBT activism.

“I feel as if I have a love affair with the gay community,” Windsor says in the interview. “When Stonewall happened I was really this ignorant middle class lady who said, ‘I don’t see why I have to be identified with those queens. And those queens changed my life.”

Watch the legendary Windsor here.
