Rep. Michele Bachmann was first in line to sign a new pledge affirming her belief that gay men are a public health risk, that gay parents are inferior to straight parents and that homosexuality is a choice.
The Family Leader announced on Thursday that it would ask candidates to pledge to ban gay marriage via a constitutional amendment and to sign a statement backing up the list of antigay statements, and the Minnesota congresswoman signed it on the same day, Advocate reports.
Bachmann is contending for the lead in Iowa in many polls, and The Family Leader is a powerful force in the state. The group is run by Bob Vander Plaats, who has compared gay marriage to the dangers of second-hand smoke. He also led the successful campaign to unseat three Iowa Supreme Court justices who legalized gay marriage in the state.
The pledge – entitled “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence upon Marriage and Family” – is a stringing together of myths. For example, a footnote on “human mortality” claims nearly half of gay and bisexual men won’t reach their 65th birthday. But the journal that released the study, based on research conducted during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, has said in a statement issued 10 years ago that the information is regularly taken out of context by “homophobic groups” and “we do not condone the use of our research in a manner that restricts the political or human rights of gay and bisexual men or any other group.”
In this case, the study and other stories make up the logic for banning gay marriage. A spokesman for Bachmann told the Des Moines Register that, “She has been married for over 30 years and has a strong marriage and faith,” and so she signed without hesitation.
The pledge makes a point in emphasizing each candidate’s own marriage as an example to others.
“We acknowledge and regret the widespread hypocrisy of many who defend marriage yet turn a blind eye toward the epidemic of infidelity and the anemic condition of marriages in their own communities,” the pledge states.

Don't forget the slavery bit too
Let's also not forget that she signed the original version, which before Family Leader rewrote it, seemed to suggest that black children born into slavery were better off in terms of family life than African-American kids today.
ugh!
She is an embarrassment to my state. And so is Pawlenty. They are both bigoted and both only looking out for the wealthy people who fund them. Gross.
..Excuse me?
So basically, not only did I chose to be gay, on top of everything else I am a bad parent. Why does it feel that the older I get the more homophobic politicians become? I would like to ask Mrs. Bachmann has she ever sat down with a member of the lgbt community, with out the cameras and hoopla and had a real open conversation with them? Has she taken the time to get to know anyone who has made this "choice" and asked them why they would chose such a thing? Just as I didn't chose to be black, I didn't chose to be a woman, I also didn't chose to be gay. However I did chose to be a mother and a damn good one too. The thing that scares me truly is that she has chosen to raise several foster children, how many of them did she try to "fix"?
Not a bad parent
Who is she to tell me I am a bad parent, most of the abuse and murders you see of children are from straight couples,or from a straight single parent.Or straight angry parents fighting over custody,of there children that our going through a divorce, and one or the other decides they don't want there ex to have them, they sometimes end up kidnapped,or worse.I think she needs,to not be so homophobic, and close minded.Being gay does not make you some sicko,or monster.I think our Republicans are STUPID,gay men are not a health risk, and picking out a certain group and trying to make an amendment denying them their rights is DISCRIMINATION!!!!!No where in our Constitution does it say we can't marry, the bible may,but it is not our law many choose to follow it,but the Constitution, gives us our freedoms!!! And my father served,so that I may have the same rights,GAY or straight !!!!!!!!!!!
I really hope she doesn't
I really hope she doesn't make it that far in this election. All she ever does is open her mouth and insert her foot...or in this case sign something and alienate a lot of voters. I'm also a Minnesotan and would never vote for someone so stupid!
Proud Minnesotan here!!!
Minnesota by Choice for 10 years and trust me, she is Fing scarry!!!And know it really is a liberal state!!!As for this choice BS... WTF
Bachman
I know being an asshole is certainly a choice and she has made it-so far not one progressive woman do the repubs have-and here I had hoped she was more on the ball then Palin. Be still xpectations!
Hypocrisy...my ass!
Of course this was to be expected by Representative Bachmann; she, and all of the homophic trolls out there, got away with it. Why can't they let people be themselves?! If there's one thing I know, being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or queer is NOT a choice, its who people are and if they can't respect that, then they can go fuck themselves!
