University of Tennessee’s women’s basketball coach, and Basketball Hall of Famer Pat Summitt, has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, according to CBS news.
Summitt, who’s coached the Tennessee Lady Vols for 37 years, will continue to coach the women’s team during the 2011 -12 season, but may have some “limitations” according to a statement the university released Tuesday.
The most successful coach in U.S. basketball history with 1,071 career victories, eight national championships and an Olympic gold medal, Summitt, 59, told the Knoxville News Sentinel that she planned to manage her condition --that could lead to Alzheimers--with medication and mental exercises.
